Unexpectedly high prices, even by Mykonos standards, has made an impression on an American woman who visited the island.
She complained to a travel agent, who was responsible for her stay, for the €592.92 bill she was asked to pay for just two cocktails and a portion of crab legs at a beach restaurant.
"We spent a beautiful day at the beach but please, warn your future customers that the restaurant-bar we visited, charged us €600 for two cocktails and a portion of crab legs," she said to Proto Thema in her message to the tourist agent.
"While we knew that the bill would not exceed €200, suddenly they asked us to pay €600!
"In fact, they put three men in front of us when I refused to pay because what they were asking for was outrageous.
"The only additional outlet was that we had sat for three hours on two deck chairs.
"Leaving, the locals told me that customers constantly alert the police about similar incidents concerning that specific establishment, but nothing is ever done."
The American tourist, who is traveling with her 19-year-old daughter, is going to file a lawsuit in the Mykonos Police Sub-Directorate against the managers of the restaurant as she claims that she received threats from employees of the restaurant.
She said they told her things like "we know where you live," when they refused to pay €600 for the two cocktails, one serving of crab legs and an excessive tip.
The Island of the Winds, which Mykonos is affectionately known as, has received bad wrap in the past few weeks alone for its excessive prices and poor treatment of workers.
This is certainly the type of press the holiday island does not want weeks before the summer begins, especially as they seek to recover after two years of strict pandemic measurements.
Elsewhere, Cyprus Airways has announced new summer 2022 flights to three Greek destinations from its base in Larnaca, Cyprus.
Starting on June 15, the airline will be conducting two weekly flights to/from the island of Mykonos.
Summer services to/from the island of Santorini will begin on June 20. The carrier will also fly once a week to the city of Preveza (western Greece) from June 14.
The news was announced on Thursday by Konstantinos Melas, commercial manager of BBT Air – Aviation Services, the General Sales Agent of Cyprus Airways in Greece.
“We are in the process of further developing our network and partnerships, as well as the opportunities that emerge in every market in the post-Covid-19 era,” Melas said during a press event in Athens.
Cyprus Airways already flies to Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion (Crete); Rhodes and Skiathos.
Outside Greece, Cyprus Airways operates flights from Larnaca to Cairo, Beirut, Tel Aviv and Jeddah.
Melas also said Cyprus Airways would receive a third new aircraft – an Airbus 320 with 180 seats – by early June. This is in addition to two new aircraft received in previous months – an A320 and an A319.
Cyprus Airways launched flights in June 2017 and is a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Meanwhile, Travelers will no longer be required to wear face masks on airplanes and at airports as of May 16, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said on Wednesday.
In the updated joint Aviation Health Safety Protocol introduced to address Covid-19, the agencies dropped the recommendation mandatory medical mask wearing in airports and on board flights, while stating that face masks are still one of the “best protections against the transmission of Covid-19”.
