Latvia backs Greece against Turkey's 'unlawful' behaviour

Latvia has expressed support for Greece against Turkey's aggression and revisionist stance in the Aegean during a joint press conference on Wednesday between the Presidents of both countries.

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulous who is on official visit to the country,  met with Latvian President Egils Levits in the city of Riga on Wednesday.

In joint statements with her Latvian counterpart, Sakellaropoulou noted that "Greece is facing Turkey's constant revisionist policy, just as Latvia had been aware of Russia's behaviour for years and had warned the international community about it."

When Turkey's revisionist and unlawful behaviour is considered "in the context of the new geopolitical environment, particularly in the critical situation after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, then it not only complicates bilateral communication, but also poses a risk of a further destabilization in the broader region, and also undermines the unity of the [NATO] Alliance."

Sakellaropoulou noted that her visit coincides with the centennial of the Greek-Latvian diplomatic relations. "Greece never recognized the illegal annexation of Latvia by the Soviet Union," she said. "I am particularly happy that my country, following the restoration of your independence, has played a unique role in your European path, since it played a leading role in the European Union's enlargement, and Latvia's accession treaty was signed in Athens in 2003," she added.
