Best Gelato in Athens, giving Rome a run for its money

By 2 years ago

Evi Papadopoulou is a classically trained chef who studied at the culinary school of renowned Italian pastry chef Iginio Massari and followed that up with specialised training in making artisanal gelato at Francesco Palmieri’s prestigious laboratory in Puglia, Italy.

In 2014, Papadopoulou opened Le Greche, a boutique gelato store tucked away on Mitropoleos Street, right off Syntagma Square. The delightful shop itself has received rave reviews and is regarded as the best gelato store in Athens, with locals, tourists and food critics saying it gives Rome a run for its money!

Carefully sourced ingredients is the key to their success, as the ricotta comes from Crete, dried figs from Kalamata, raisins from Corinth, honey from the Cyclades, fresh milk and strained Greek yogurt from local farms, eggs from Megara, sour cherries from Macedonia, lemons and melons from Argos, oranges from Laconia and sweet wines from the islands of Lemnos and Santorini. And of course, there are some ingredients also sourced from Italy, the Kings of Gelato!

Quality for Le Greche means no artificial additives, no margarine or colourings and only fresh fruit of the season, the best chocolate in the world and consciousness about their products nutritional value.

Don't leave without trying their new ice-cream sandwiches and we can assure you, you'll definitely want to go back to try all their flavours!
