Athens’ all-time favourite Souvlaki spot  "Kostas"

OK

If you ask locals, which is their all-time favourite Souvlaki shop in the heart of Athens? Chances are most will respond with “Kostas.”

Kostas Souvlaki

This iconic Athenian street food store has been around since 1950 and first opened its doors in a tiny location in Plaka. Today, owner Kostas Lavidas, who is none other than the grandson of the eatery’s founder Kosta, has relocated to a slightly larger shop near Syntagma Square.

So not only has Kosta Junior been named after his Pappou, but he has also followed in his famous footsteps!

At Kostas, the secret is in the delicious rolls of pita bread – stuffed with lean Xirino Souvlaki (pork skewers) or Gyros (kebab), tomato, strained yogurt, paprika, and parsley.  Yes, they are small compared to many others, but the best part is that they are not greasy.

And it’s the freshness of the meat and simplicity of the filling that tempts you to not want to stop at just one!

We must warn you though, that it’s best to get there before midday, as there are always crowds of people waiting for their Souvlaki hit and chances, are if you arrive there after 3 pm, they will have sold out!
