Turkish opposition attacks Erdoğan for approving Swedish, Finnish NATO membership

The Turkish opposition has fiercely attacked Recep Tayyip Erdoğan over his capitulation at a NATO summit in Madrid over Sweden and Finland joining the Alliance.

The Republican People's Party (CHP) parliamentary representative, Özgür Özel, went so far as to comment caustically on the Turkish president's spectacular "cubits", saying that all that remained was to become the "best man" of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

"Erdoğan used to say: 'Mitsotakis no longer exists for me', 'I do not want to meet Mitsotakis again'. But if we look at his abrupt changes, and the 'cubits; he makes, then we should not be surprised if we see Erdoğan as the best man at Mitsotakis' wedding ceremony. What he says has no value anymore," Özel said.

The President of the "Good Party" (IYI) Meral Akşener, a fierce opponent of President Erdoğan, also known as the "wolf", described the development as a "concession incompatible with Turkey's interests".

"The recognition of the PKK as a terrorist organisation by Sweden and Finland is nothing new. The important thing was to see concrete actions that would put an end to the PKK's presence in these two countries. Therefore, this signature of the government, without any specific developments in Sweden and Finland, is unfortunately a concession incompatible with the interests of our country," Akşener told members of her parliamentary group.

She pointed out that: "The tripartite mechanism that will be created to fulfill the promises made according to the text of the memorandum will enter into force after Sweden and Finland become members of NATO.

"That is, in case the mechanism does not work, Turkey, having lost the NATO paper, will be forced to look for an interlocutor to explain its fair fight."

Shots fired at the Turkish president and by the opposition press A characteristic is the article by Soner Yalçın in the Sözcü newspaper, which directly asks the question to Erdoğan: "What did you get that you swallowed your words?".
