With a straight-set win over Viktoriya Tomova, Wimbledon No. 5 seed Maria Sakkari is through to the third round of the tournament.
Maria Sakkari wins in just over an hour (6-4, 6-3 in 1h18′) and will play Tatjana Maria for a place in the knockout stages of Wimbledon, which would be a first for her.
Sakkari’s first round win over Aussie Zoe Hives was over in the blink of an eye, and the Greek star has marched into the third round after a 6-4 6-3 win over Viktoriya Tomova.
“I’m just enjoying my game on the grass because there were certain people saying I could never play on the grass, but I believe that I really can because I’m a good mover, I have a good serve,” Sakkari said.
“As I said, I’ve been playing more aggressive, so I don’t see why not doing well on this surface.”
Sakkari, who has never made it past the third round at Wimbledon, survived a brutal day at the All-England Club as three top 10 singles seeds crashed out of the women’s draw.
This victory also allows the Greek to leave behind her missed Roland-Garros with elimination in the second round.
