"Erdoğan wants a weak Greece, Greeks know who is plotting against them": Gov't spox

Athens is watching - and responding, as usual, when it deems it appropriate, the latest provocations from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who even reached the point of dealing with the Greek elections and exhorting citizens on who to vote for and who not for!

"The continuous strengthening of Greece - militarily, diplomatically and economically - saddens Mr. Erdoğan and leads him to make statements that go beyond what is expected," government spokesman, Yiannis Economou, said in a statement in response to the president of Turkey.

"Greek men and women have the necessary historical education and patriotism to keep their ears hermetically closed to the exhortations of those who are plotting against their homeland," the spokesman continued.

"It is very obvious that the prime minister's successes and the strengthening of Greece do not leave Mr. Erdoğan alone.

"Although he himself would prefer a weak Greece, we do and will adamantly do what promotes our national rights.

"After all, the truly powerful does not need to proclaim it every three or so times", added Economou, with the peak point being that preferred the previous government in power.

Earlier, Erdoğan, speaking at a military academy, repeated the false accusations of violations of Turkey's airspace by Greece, suggesting that Athens should "learn a lesson both from the developments in our region and from the events before a century."

"To those who continuously attack our airspace, we give the necessary lesson where it is due mainly with our air force and we will continue to do so.

"No one should have any doubt that we will protect our land, sea and air borders in the West, without making the slightest concession to our rights in the Aegean and making full use of the opportunities given to us by international agreements."

And he continued: "Instead of solving our differences through dialogue and negotiation, they are hiding under the skirts of others and we recommend that the administration of Greece learn a lesson both from the developments in our region and from the events of a century ago."

In conclusion, Erdoğan sent a message to the Greeks about the elections: "It is a reality that our neighbour in the Aegean politically, economically and militarily is not on the same level as us.

"That is why in Turkey's strategic calculations it has its rightful place.

"I hope that the Greek people will give the message and the lesson through the democratic way, to their rulers, who are running after adventures, which will bring a disastrous end for the Greek people."
