Thessaloniki: 60-year-old man arrested for stealing bougatsa

A 60-year-old man was sentenced to four months and ten days in prison, suspended for three years, by the Three-member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki.

His crime? Stealing frozen bougatsa from a supermarket and resisting the police who were called to the scene.

The incident was reported last Friday in a supermarket in Lagadas, Thessaloniki.

According to Proto Thema, it was seven packages of clothes, with a total value of 15.26 euros, of which one was found under his clothes and the rest in a bag.

An employee of the business had notified the police and two officers arrived at the scene.

According to a witness, the 60-year-old man, originally from Albania, "was pushing and didn't allow us to reprimand him […] saying incomprehensible things."

The accused has been working for over 25 years in a cheese factory, has never had issues with authorities and is paid satisfactorily.

He himself said in his testimony said that he intended to pay for the items, while also referring to the "war in Europe...".

By the majority, he was found guilty with a reduced charge, without recognition of mitigating circumstances, while the defence's request for attempted theft of items of small value was rejected. The 60-year-old appealed and was released.
