The Greek island that records population growth – 4th in Greece, 1st in the Cyclades

The Greek island of Ios registered an increase in population according to the data of the 2021 Census, officially announced by the Hellenic Statistical Service (ELSTAT). Specifically, an increase of 13.5% was measured from 2,024 residents in 2011 to 2,297 in 2021.

Based on the proportional increase in the population, these figures rank the Municipality in fourth place nationwide and at the top of the ranking in the Cyclades Regional Unit.

Expressing his joy for the event, the Mayor of Ios, Mr. Gkikas Gkikas, said: "The official data confirmed what we all experience: Our island is growing and developing. We become more, so that our voice can be heard more.

"We are working in this direction as a Municipal Authority, and in this way we are committed to continue.

"To improve the living conditions of our fellow citizens, to overcome as much as possible the obstacles of insularity and to create incentives for a permanent stay on our island all year round and not just seasonally.

"We all know that, especially in the winter months, life on the island is difficult. We fight adversity and steadily strengthen our infrastructure and services to ensure a more comfortable and quality everyday life for everyone.

"We send a strong message that our Ios is getting better every day. That it can be a small island, but it can develop into a model island.

"We have set this goal and we are making every effort together to achieve it."

After all, Ios is an example of an island that follows developments and adapts to new tourist and travel demands.

In the 70's it was the refuge of hippies and in the 80's and 90's it was the top destination for young people in Greece and abroad for a night out until the morning.

Gradually, however, from 2000 onwards, realising that the travel experience is changing, it showed reflexes and quickly adapted.

Its beaches, its landscape and its traditional and modern gastronomy can compete with the rest of the popular islands of the Cyclades and beyond.

Without renouncing the vibrant nightlife, it upgraded its accommodations with renovations and the creation of new luxury hotels with excellent facilities and emphasized the local culinary tradition, thus winning the interest of travelers again.
