An elderly couple in Sydney’s inner west has been potentially saved from bankruptcy and homelessness over a strata debt by a crowdfunding campaign that raised nearly $63,000.

As first reported by The Greek City Times, Nitsa and Spiros Tzavellas, pensioners aged 78 and 81, were forced to put their home of 50 years up for sale after the owners’ corporation voted for upgrades to the building’s windows they could not afford and initiated bankruptcy proceedings to recoup the debt.

The couple’s nephew subsequently set up a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign and donations halve now been turned off at $62,770.

Nitsa Tzavellas said she and Spiros were happy and grateful for the outpouring of support from the community after so much stress. The couple has been fighting the strata debt and bankruptcy while dealing with significant health problems.

“I have to thank all the people that donated ... with all my heart; I thank everybody,” Nitsa Tzavellas said. “People supported me and my husband, and I will never forget this. Everyone saved me to stay in my house.”
