FINDING HOME: La Trobe University honours Greek Australian migration story

La Trobe University in partnership with the Delphi Bank and the Society for Hellenic Studies and Research, are presenting Finding Home, an exhibition honouring the Greek-Australian migration story which runs till 7 October at the Delphi Bank, 15 Atherton Rd, Oakleigh.

The exhibition features a unique collection of items from La Trobe University’s Dardalis Archives of the Hellenic Diaspora (Greek Archives), Finding Home portrays the long journey of thousands of people forced to leave their homeland in hope of finding a new home in Australia.

La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor John Dewar AO said he was proud of the University’s involvement in the exhibition.

“La Trobe has a strong connection with Melbourne’s Greek community through its research, Greek language program, world-sporting facilities and community programs,” Professor Dewar said.

“Having custodianship of the precious Dardalis Archives is another way the University is deeply connected to Greek culture – which is why we are delighted to partner with the Delphi Bank and the Society for Hellenic Studies and Research to present this exhibition to the public.”

Acting La Trobe University Librarian, Jay Glaisyer, said visitors will see photographs, costumes, records and newspapers depicting Greek culture, heritage and history.

“More than just items, the display is a celebration of the hardships and accomplishments of the Greek community in Australia,” Ms Glaisyer said.

“The exhibition offers a glimpse into the stories, lives, relationships and spirit of Greek-Australians and invites viewers to reflect on their own life’s journey.”

Delphi Bank General Manager, Jim Sarris, said “Delphi Bank and its parent Bendigo Bank are strongly committed to supporting and nurturing ties with the Hellenic Australia diaspora, and this exhibition is a great example of this.”

La Trobe University’s Greek Archives comprise a unique collection of more than 180,000 items documenting the migration of the Greek community to Australia, Greek history and culture and the wider Hellenic diaspora.

Donated to La Trobe in 2011, the Greek Archives are of great value to the local Greek community, as they showcase its history and contribution to Australia.
