August 4th, 1865 - By official decree, the Hymn to Liberty becomes the official Greek National Anthem

The lyrics for the anthem come from the epic 158-stanza poem by Dionysios Solomos in 1823.

The first 2 stanzas of the poem, were set to the music of composer Nikolaos Mantzaros and became the National anthem of Greece and later of Cyprus.
