"I want to thank the expatriates of Canada for the great honor to invite me and spend together the great celebration of Orthodoxy. The Greeks of the diaspora play a leading role in the economic, social and scientific life of the countries they live in, which is why they are the best ambassadors of our homeland," opposition party PASOK-Movement for Change leader Nikos Androulakis said on Monday from Canada.
"We therefore have a national duty to embrace their anxieties, especially in the matter of education, where the needs have multiplied in recent years," he added.
Elsewhere, main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras said on Monday that the Assumption of Virgin Mary is "the day of the Mother who loves, forgives, comforts, supports. Without distinguishing colour, religion, passports."
He noted that it is a day of "expectation and hope."
Tsipras in a post on his personal Facebook account said that "the people who persist, the ordinary people who stubbornly hold on to their lives, the children who dream, the chased refugees and the people of poverty, the wounded, those who are afraid of darkness and the future, feel that today is a day of relief and hope."
