The Greek National Security Council has approved the expansion of the border wall with Turkey following a meeting on Tuesday chaired by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
During the meeting discussion focused on the pressures Greece faces at its land and sea borders with participants deciding to gradually expand the fence barrier along the entire length of the Evros border with Turkey.
Meanwhile related ministries and the National Defence General Staff will prioritize which sections of the fence should be built first, through a bidding process. They also decided to upgrade and enforce patrolling in order to prevent illegal entry into the country.
The extension of the fence by around 80 km had been announced by Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarakis on Friday, during an interview with Skai radio. The minister has been included in the council meetings by decision of the prime minister.
Members of the council include several ministers, including of foreign affairs, national defense, citizen protection, migration & asylum, shipping, climate crisis & civil protection, as well as the intelligence service chief, the national defense chief, and others.
