ALONISSOS: Amazing images of the first underwater civil wedding

In Alonissos, the first organised underwater civil wedding took place on Monday at the initiative of the Municipality.

Petros and Myrto exchanged vows of eternal love and loyalty at the magical bottom of Alonissos.

The couple was married by the mayor of Alonissos, Petros Vafinis, who had obtained a diving license in order to perform weddings under the turquoise waters of the island.

Present at the bottom were the two bridesmaids, the President of the Tourism Commission Maria Agallou, who took over the wedding organisation, as well as three diving instructors from the Triton Dive Centre who volunteered, Proto Thema reported.

It is worth noting that the entire ceremony was followed to the letter through the use of special waterproof surfaces with all the procedures of the civil marriage, as well as the words of the newlyweds, who temporarily removed their masks after exchanging vows for their first wedding kiss.

An underwater camera operator filmed the wedding, which was broadcast live on a large screen placed on the beach for the guests, while it was also possible to watch via mobile phone.

"It is indescribable the feelings that flood you at the bottom during the wedding. In ideal conditions of peace offered by the underwater nature, time stops and this moment belongs exclusively to the couple", said the mayor of Alonissos after the ceremony.

There was a previous call by the Municipality of Alonissos on Valentine's Day for the organisation of underwater weddings, which immediately sparked the interest of couples.

"Our goal is to open a new market for Greece and the island," the mayor said.

Alonissos is developing into an international diving destination and this year it was chosen by hundreds of scuba divers from all over the world.

In general, the island recorded very high occupancy rates throughout the summer season reaching up to 100% for August, while the tourist traffic will continue until the first ten days of October," added Vafinis.
