“The Dormition of the Virgin” - Father Konstantinos Kontos tells the story

“The Dormition of the Virgin” is one of El Greco’s early period works and is located at Panagia Psariani in Syros. Father Konstantinos Kontos tells the story of the iconography created by Domenikos Theotokopoulos. The icon was brought to the island of Syros by a refugee fisherman.

In fact, for 150 years and whilst it was exposed for pilgrimage, no one knew its creator. In 1983, the archaeologist Georgios Mastoropoulos found himself on the island; after research, the signature of the great painter El Greco was on the image.

The icon was then transferred to Athens and specifically to the Byzantine Museum for preservation and returned to its “base” a little later, where it is now protected inside the church of Ermoupoulis.

Our comprehension of El Greco's early works and influences has substantially improved due to the discovery of this signature, which has spurred the discovery of other results by the artist.

The Dormition of the Virgin by El Greco draws its inspiration from a theological idea that has been the focus of worship and artistic expression for thousands of years.

The Dormition, also known as the Assumption, is the idea that the Virgin Mary did not actually die when she left this world but rather briefly dozed off until her soul and body were carried to heaven and united.
