Kyrgios and Kokkinakis, affectionately known as the “Special Ks” stunned the tennis community by winning the Australian Open men’s doubles in Melbourne earlier this year.
The entertaining Aussie duo have progress through to the third round of the US Open after defeating Sweden’s Andre Goransson and Japan’s Yoshi Nishioka in straight sets on Sunday morning.
The Special Ks will fight for a spot in the US Open quarterfinals against No. 11 seed Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara on Tuesday morning.
Earlier in the US Open, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis faced off in the first round of the singles tournament, with the former walking away with a comfortable 6-3 6-4 7-6 straight sets victory.
Kyrgios confessed that coming up against his close mate was a “nightmare”.
“I played a really good first couple of sets, got on top of the match early,” he said after the match.
“When we saw the draw, it was a nightmare honestly. We never want to play each other and he probably beats 80 per cent of the draw tonight, he’s been playing really good.
“I’ve just got so much respect for him so I can’t wait to get out there and play doubles with him on the right side of the net in a couple of days.
“We’re going to play each other, hopefully, never again.”
