From The Times: September 5, 1922

There can no longer be any doubt that the Greeks have suffered disaster in Asia Minor.

The Greek Army has lost heart in face of the onslaught of Turkish Nationalists, and the Greeks are retreating to Smyrna. The Government at Athens have decided that it is impossible to maintain a defence.

The one hope is that the retirement to the sea and ports of embarcation may be effected without too great disorder. Time must be secured to provide for the transport of the Greek Army.

The Allied High Commissioners are discussing in Constantinople the possibility of arranging an armistice so that the debacle may not degenerate into utter chaos.

The Greeks have been foolish, but they have received encouragement.
