Cyprus: 35 female students suspended because principal didn't like their haircuts

Dozens of students at "Petraki Kyprianou" High School in the Cypriot city of Larnaca were expelled today by the school's principal, who thought their haircuts were inappropriate.

This naturally caused a disturbance, Proto Thema reported, as parents rushed to the school to pick up their children, according to the President of the Larnaca Parents' Confederation, K. Costas.

In his statements, Mr. Kostas said that "unfortunately, impunity brings worse results."

"After the tragic handling of the expulsion of the five students in this particular school last year at the graduation ceremony and after the community was stunned by these expulsions, today as the President of the Federation of Parents, I have received dozens of messages from parents saying that their children have been suspended for one to two days, both for unsatisfactory haircuts and for uniform issues."

He added that "it is unacceptable on the first day, in an educational institution that should function as the students' second home, where they should be embraced by the teachers and to really feel that they are coming to a home of their own, instead of being suspended for one to two days."
