Shortly before midnight on Friday, the Immediate Action Police operations centre in Thessaloniki received a call about young people who were possibly carrying Molotov cocktails in the Upper Town area.
Police officers immediately went to Aeschylou Street. There they spotted a group of young boys and girls. At the suggestion of the neighbours, they found a burnt icon of the Virgin Mary.
According to the Thestival, one of the young people told the police a little later that he had burned the icon. When asked by the police why they did it, they replied that they cannot justify their act.
The young people were brought to the White Tower Security Department.
