The Norwegian hopeful now finds himself just ahead of third-placed Rafael Nadal, who was knocked out of the US Open by home favourite Frances Tiafoe at the quarter-final stage.

Further down the order, Djokovic has slipped to seventh place after missing out on the tournament altogether as a result of his vaccination status, while Nick Kyrgios has only made up five positions to move into 20th after his defeat at the hands of Karen Khachanov in the last eight.

Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas now sit fourth, fifth and sixth respectively ahead of Djokovic and Cameron Norrie, who has managed to earn a career-high placing of eighth to cap off a hugely productive year.
