After US, Europe, now Britain rebukes Turkey: Aegean islands belong to Greece

By 2 years ago

After the US and Europe, Britain has stepped in to affirm Greek sovereignty over Aegean islands that Turkey has been questioning.

The UK's Foreign & Commonwealth Office stated on Wednesday that "we do not consider the sovereignty of Aegean Islands to be in question."

The British foreign affairs ministry was responding to a Greek reporter's question on the matter.

The United States last Wednesday responded to the same issue, saying Greek sovereignty over two islands was not in doubt after Ankara protested the deployment of US armoured vehicles.

Last week Turkey summoned the Greek ambassador and complained to the United States after releasing aerial images that it said showed ships with the US armoured vehicles docking in Lesbos and Samos.

“Greek's sovereignty over these islands is not in question,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.

“We urge all the parties to avoid rhetoric and taking actions that could further exacerbate tensions. The sovereignty the territorial integrity of all countries should be respected,” Price said.
