Corfu’s Old Town is set for restoration, revamp

Corfu New Fortress

The Corfu Venetian fortification from the early 15th century is a component of a plan by the Culture Ministry to enhance the historic district's usability, upkeep, and general atmosphere.

One of the most complete defence systems in the Eastern Mediterranean is found in Corfu's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to Minister Lina Mendoni on Wednesday.

The design, which calls for the construction of the later New Fortress, is based on research completed over a two-year period by the ministry and the National Technical University of Athens.

With funding from the EU Recovery Fund, work will begin on restoring the Bastion of the Seven Winds in the New Fortress.
