Australian pub baron Justin Hemmes, 50, has paid $10.15 million for an 840sqm Greek-owned gas station site next door to his Merivale venue, The Vic on the Park hotel, in the Sydney suburb of Marrickville.

The gas station which was owned by the Hatzivasiliou family since 2001, is adjacent to The Vic on the Park which Hemmes previously purchased in 2017 for $22 million.

It comes after Hemmes opened up on his ambitious new plans to build a skyscraper in Sydney's CBD and expand his pub empire interstate.

He plans to revamp his Ivy precinct by putting a tower on the site, develop his third entertainment zone in the Sydney CBD and shake up Melbourne's pub scene.

Marrickville has a complex identity. The traditional land of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation was formerly industrial swathe of land in the Cook’s River basin that’s since become a desirable postcode for families – but there’s still a lot of manufacturing and business rubbing shoulders with those beautiful federation homes and terraces. Waves of Greek and Vietnamese residents have also left their mark, and it’s got a healthy dose of creative colour on top, thanks to a new influx of art communities that have moved out of central Sydney.
