Former England national team captain Harry Maguire is not guaranteed a spot in the English national squad for the World Cup following his conviction for assaulting Greek police officers two years ago on the island of Mykonos reports the Daily Mail.

According to the media outlet, Maguire is hoping for a World Cup call up by England before the tournament starts in just four weeks, but his appeal against the conviction is not due to be heard until next year and six officers who say they were attacked are still awaiting an apology from him.

In August 2020 Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was found guilty on three counts- aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated bribery attempts, after a brawl on the Greek island of Mykonos.

Maguire was not present at the time of the trial on the nearby island of Syros.

The Manchester United captain was handed a jail term of 21 months and 10 days, but was suspended because it was a first offence, and the charges are considered to be misdemeanours rather than felonies.

Two other co-defendants were also found guilty, court officials in Greece said as Maguire's older brother Joe had been accused of assault and attempted bribery, and the pair's friend Christopher Sharman accused of assault and verbal abuse.

At the time of the trial Maguire was withdrawn from the England squad for the matches against Iceland and Denmark, England manager Gareth Southgate announced after the verdict. Gareth Southgate in a statement had said: "In light of this evening's developments, I can confirm I have withdrawn Harry Maguire from the England squad for the matches against Iceland and Denmark."
