Pope Francis and Anastasiades to meet in the Vatican - Cyprus issue will be raised

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has been in the Vatican since yesterday as part of an official visit at the invitation of Pope Francis. According to a Cyprus Presidency announcement, Anastasiades will inform the Pope about the current situation in Cyprus during their meeting today.

They will also discuss issues related to climate change, particularly the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to deal with its consequences in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Among other things, immigration will also be discussed and the problems faced by the Republic of Cyprus with the ever-increasing flow of immigrants who irregularly cross the green line from Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus to the free territories.

Regional developments and bilateral relations between Cyprus and the Vatican will also be discussed.

Afterwards, the Cypriot president will have a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Vatican, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Archbishop Paul Gallagher.

In the evening, Anastasiades will attend a dinner hosted by the Ambassador of Cyprus to the Vatican George Poulides, in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Holy See, during which the president will be presented with the Medal by Parolin with the Necklace of the Order of Knights of Pope Pius IX.
