Turkey celebrates its national day each year on October 29. On this day in 1923, The First Grand National Assembly declared Turkey to be a republic and successor state of the Ottoman Empire. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was elected as the first president.

Atatürk created a "Turkey for the Turks" by systemically killing three million Christian Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians.
