Last World War II Evzone Georgios Gizas dies aged 106

Georgios Gizas, the last World War II evzone of the heroic 2/39 Evzone Regiment who defeated Mussolini's forces, died aged 106 in Nafpaktos on Saturday reported Greek media.

In 2021, the mayor of Nafpaktia, Vassilis Giza's, honoured the hero, which he recalled fondly on the day of his death.

"We say goodbye to 106-year-old Georgios Gizas, the last Evzone of the heroic 2/39 S.E. of the Greek-Italian front.

"One year ago, on the 28th of October, we honoured all those heroic Greek fighters when honouring him in a special moment for all of us.

"May his memory live forever!" wrote the mayor in a social media post.
