What Stefanos Tsitsipas must do to reach No. 1 in the world tennis ranking

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Rafael Nadal have a unique opportunity to end the year at No. 1 in the world tennis ranking depending on how the ATP Finals pans out.

The withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz from the last tournament of the season in Turin, leaves this window open for the two tennis players to surpass him and close the year at the top of the ranking.

For Tsitsipas, of course, it is much more difficult. Alcaraz ends his season with 6,820 points. Nadal is exactly 1,000 behind him (5,820) and Tsitsipas is at 5,350. Each win in the group gives 200 points, while a win in the semifinals gives 400 and in the final 500.

For Nadal , this gives two scenarios: Either finish the group with 3 out of 3 and advance to the final as well, or make a 2-1 record in the group, but to qualify and take the trophy.

For Tsitsipas there is only one scenario: to take it undefeated. If he goes 3-for-3 in the group and goes all the way to winning the trophy (for the second time in his career), then he will get 1,500 points and reach 6,850, 30 points ahead of Alcaraz.

An extremely difficult scenario, of course, as whatever draw there is in the group, with the names coming down, it seems extremely difficult for someone to make 3 out of 3 in a group.

Let's remember that after the withdrawal of Alcaraz, the 8 in Turin consists of the following tennis players:

  • Rafael Nadal
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas
  • Casper Ruud
  • Daniil Medvedev
  • Félix Auger-Aliassime
  • Novak Djokovic
  • Andrey Rublev
  • Taylor Fritz
