ATHENS: Massive strikes to cripple transportation on Wednesday

Metro Line 1 Athens rail public transport athens strike

Athens is set to be crippled as transportation strikes will expectedly grind the Greek capital to a halt on Wednesday.

The unions of public transport staff have announced a series of work stoppages during Wednesday's 24-hour strike. The management of the metro and tram services (STASY S.A.) and the bus services (OSY S.A) have contested the strike action in the courts, asking that it be ruled illegal and abusive.

Based on the strike action announced by the various unions, public transport services on Wednesday will operate as follows:

  • Buses will operate from 09:00 until 21:00
  • Trolley buses will not operate throughout the day
  • Metro lines 2 and 3 will operate from 09:30 until 15:00
  • Metro line 1 will carry out their routes between 09:00 and 17:00.
  • Tram services will be conducted from 08:00 to 22:00.

Also participating in the 24-hour strike are railway workers (trains and urban railways). However, the train drivers' union, in order to facilitate the citizens' participation in the strike, decided to hold work stoppages from the start of the morning shift until 09:00 and from 17:00 until the end of the shift.

Additionally, there will be no taxis in Athens throughout the day.

There will also be changes, cancellations and modifications in Aegean and Olympic Air flights due a six-hour work stoppage of the Greek Air Traffic Controllers' Association.
