MARCELO OUT: Olympiacos "fed up" with former Real Madrid star amid "fitness concerns"

Marcelo Olympiacos

Greek football club Olympiacos look set to terminate Marcelo's contract due to fitness issues and a series of uninspiring performances in the first half of the season.

Although the Real Madrid legend joined the Greek champions only two months ago and received the biggest hero's welcome of any star signing at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.

But the full-back has failed to live up to the immense hype he received in September after his glittering 15-year stint at Real came to an end.

With the Madrid side, he won 25 major honours, including five Champions League trophies.

According to FootMercato, as cited by BeFootball, the Piraeus giants are "fed up" with the former Brazil international being unable to play more than 30 minutes per match.

The same report claims Olympiacos are unhappy with the 34-year-old's inability to regain full fitness.

Therefore, the Greek giants' manager Michel won't be including Marcelo in his plans for the second half of the season with the team currently fourth in the Superleague table.

Marcelo has not managed to start a single game for Olympiacos and has fallen down the pecking order at left-back.

The defender has only made a mere five appearances and 121 minutes across all competitions.

According to Greek reporter Kostas Nikolakopoulos, Marcelo has an offer to hang up his boots and return to Real to become a global ambassador.

There is also interest from Brazilian clubs offering him the chance to retire in his homeland.

Marcelo Olympiacos

Olympiacos went through a turbulent summer that saw them sack two managers - club legend Pedro Martins and current West Brom boss Carlos Corberan - and completed a total of 17 signings.

Among them were star arrivals as Marcelo was joined by former Real team-mate and Everton star James Rodriguez as well as ex-Atletico Madrid and Croatia ace Sime Vrsaljko.

Vrsaljko also failed to deliver as his contract was terminated on Monday but James has been firing on all cylinders and earned a new deal.
