JNU's Greek Chair receives major research grant from Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul

The President and Board of the Hellenic Indian Society for Culture and Development congratulate Prof. Vasileios Syros, Greek Chair, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, on his selection to receive a major grant by the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul for the spring term of 2023, ELINEPA announced.

This selection is yet another recognition of the research work of the distinguished historian and professor Vasilios Syros on the historical relations of South Asia with Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire and will contribute decisively to the implementation of his new research project on Renaissance Greeks and the images of central (Safavid) and southern (Mughal) Asia in Europe.

The Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul (SRII) was founded in 1962 with the aim of promoting Swedish and Nordic research about Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean as well as other regions that are connected linguistically, culturally, or historically.

The board of the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul announces several grants for research every year.

Dr. Vasileios Syros is a historian of political thought, Professor and Holder of the Chair in Greek Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi, India), and the Director of the Early Modern Greek Culture Program at The Medici Archive Project in Florence, Italy.

He is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for European Global Studies at the University of Basel and a Life Member of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge.

His main research and teaching interests lie in the comparative examination of medieval and early modern Christian, Islamic, and Jewish political traditions.

The second cluster of his research looks at intercultural contacts between pre-modern Europe and non-Western societies and polities, especially the Byzantine and Mughals.

Prof. Syros has worked since 2006 on the history of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire and was a visiting fellow at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advanced Study at JNU in 2008.
