Small earthquake of magnitude 3.5 just reported 49 km northeast of Acharnes, Greece

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake near Acharnes, Nomarchía Anatolikís Attikís, Attica, Greece, was reported only 27 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 12.1 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Friday, December 9th, 2022, at 2:06 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.0.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Kouvelles (pop. 44) located 7 km from the epicenter.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kifissia (pop. 47,300) located 43 km from the epicenter, Agia Paraskevi (pop. 59,700) 45 km away, Marousi (pop. 72,300) 45 km away, Chalandri (pop. 74,200) 47 km away, Iraklion (pop. 49,600) 48 km away, Acharnes (pop. 99,300) 49 km away, and Nea Ionia (pop. 67,100) 49 km away. In Athens (pop. 664,000, 54 km away), and Peristeri (pop. 140,000, 55 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
