World Cup 2022: The Netherlands-Argentina referee whistled the last Greek Cup final

By 1 year ago

Someone familiar to Greek football lovers, Antonio Mateu Lahoz, will whistle the World Cup 2022 quarter-final between the Netherlands and Argentina.

The Spanish referee, who is in the Elite category of UEFA and has whistled the final of the Champions League 2021 between Manchester City and Chelsea, was a few months ago the whistleblower of the final of the Greek Cup.

Lahoz was called upon to officiate Panathinaikos' game with PAOK, which had stoppages, incidents, controversial phases and was finally won by the Athens team, which finally won a title after 8 years.

Lahoz and Messi

The referee had blown the whistle in 2014 between Atletico Madrid and Lionel Messi's Barcelona. The game had decided the title and Atletico won it.

The Spaniard in that match had Messi's goal wrongly disallowed for offside, which would have likely given the Blaugrana the title. After the end, in fact, he apologised to the team.
