Alexandros, "defender of men"

Share

Alexandros (or Alexander), a popular name for many races, is the Latin variant of the Greek Alexandros, which means "defender of men".

Most ancient Greek names describe something, they are not just a name. Another such Ancient Greek name is Philippos (lover of horses). The English version is of course Philip.

Perhaps the most famous Greek Philippos was the father of Alexander the Great of Macedonia.

The very Greek names of both Alexander and his father Philip, are testimony that these two historical figures belonged to the Greek race and were not Slavs as claimed by Greece's northern neighbours.

Alexander the Great's mother was called Olympia, which was not her original given name, but a name given to her by her husband King Philip II after he participated in the Ancient Olympic games, which were held exclusively for participants from Greek City States and Kingdoms.

Non Greeks were not allowed to participate.
