Ash Barty claims fifth Newcombe medal over Kyrgios despite her early retirement from tennis

Nick Kyrgios has shown his feelings on social media, claiming Tennis Australia has no “respect” for the star after he was overlooked for the Newcombe Medal.

Retired tennis ace Ash Barty was awarded the sports’ top Australian honour for a record fifth time on Monday night after winning the Australian Open in January and going undefeated down under.

However, the 26-year-old retired at the end of March, only three months into the season.

Nick Kyrgios, Ajla Tomljanovic, Alex de Minaur, Wimbledon doubles champions Matt Ebden and Max Purcell and Australia’s Billie Jean King Cup standout Hunter were the other nominees.

This year Kyrgios he has put together a career-best campaign, highlighted by his Wimbledon Final appearance where he took a set off eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Kyrgios also won the Australian Open doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis, made the ATP Finals in doubles and finished as the country’s top-ranked singles and doubles player.

Kyrgios also added a graphic comparing his and Barty's tournament victories (which Kyrgios leads 4-3) and match wins (Kyrgios 61-14) this season.
