Tourism will play a key role in Greece's economic growth and all the ministry's actions are aimed in this direction, Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias said on Friday during the debate on the state budget in parliament.

"The tourism sector is the only sector of the economy that shows such a balanced horizontal distribution of the wealth produced," underlined Kikilias.

At the same time, in terms of major investments in infrastructure and construction, tourism projects make up the majority and there are at least 40 professions working in construction, he said.

"Tourism is not a luxury sector for the Greek economy but the very definition of a popular economy," said Kikilias, pointing that hundreds of thousand of workers and small enterpises earn income from the sector.

"With a multiplier that be as high as 2.6, the extent of the contribution that the tourism product makes to our economy is understood by all," he added.
