Gold Coast Council decides the fate of mystery Greek statue

Council has taken action against a Greek statue installed at Burleigh Hill in mysterious circumstances.

The council decided to move the statue, which has been likened to a Banksy moment on social media. The statue appeared a few weeks ago mysteriously but was removed earlier today by Gold Coast Council and put in storage.

In a statement over the incident, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate encouraged anyone wanting to have public art installations placed to “go through the right channels”.

“People know I love art and art is subjective… but there’s a place for it.

“On this instance I look at it as illegal dumping, the statue will be removed and they can reclaim it at our depot.”

Well done, Gold Coast Council (sarcasm font). A lovely Banksy moment with this anonymous installation on Burleigh Hill, destroyed and taken away by the council today. With a grain of imagination and a bit of humour, the council could have secured it better for citizens' enjoyment, said Meridith Baxter on Twitter.
