Greek Scientists Reveal Mechanism to Control Aging and Fertility

A fresh chemical mechanism that regulates ageing and fertility in cells has been found by Greek scientists.

On Tuesday, the worldwide scientific journal Nature published the findings of researchers from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH).

They provide new insight into an essential system that controls physical and reproductive ageing, maintains the integrity and functionality of the nucleus.

Understanding the molecular underpinnings of two fundamentally opposed biological phenomena—namely, the mortality of the body and the immortality of the so-called stem cell line, or the cells that ensure reproduction—is one of the fascinating puzzles of contemporary biomedical research, according to Nektarios Tavernarakis, a professor in the field.
