The cabaret shows of Athens and the Greek of Crazy Horse

cabaret shows in athens

There are interactive cabaret shows, with artists, singers, dancers, and acrobats from all over the world.  They create a magical atmosphere and an entertaining experience that people can enjoy with dinner.

The beginning of this in Greece was was made by Lio, the well-known Ibiza club restaurant that opened a branch in Mykonos two summers ago and is now overwhelmed by celebrities.

Lio managed to quickly stand out and emerge victorious in the fierce competition of Mykonos as it had the know-how to successfully combine the experience of a modern sensual show with culinary delight, refined Mediterranean flavours and impeccable service.

A secret door in one of the narrow streets of Mykonos Town leads you directly to an impressive garden, in a unique setting that combined elegance with hedonism.

Lio's success did not go unnoticed in Athens. Some entrepreneurs tried to do the same after seeing that this entertainment trend is gaining more and more audience, especially those who have the ability to spend.

So the baton from Lio in Mykonos was taken by Parfait in Athens, presenting a mixture of music, dance performances and acrobatics with the entire cast of artists in constant interaction with the guests.

This happen from the moment they pass the door of the shop and they will be in the large atmospheric hall until the early hours of the morning.

Great voices, glamorous costumes, good food, sensuality, cocktails, elegance, parties, plenty of champagne, create an experience that is hard to forget. Recently, Parfait was lucky enough to host a great Greek artist, George Bangable, known as George Papadakis.

The first man to sing at the legendary Paris cabaret, Crazy Horse after the late French "Frank Sinatra" Charles Aznavour.

Son of Greek immigrants

George Papadakis roots are from Mesara, Heraklion Prefecture, Crete, but he was born and lived most of his life in Belgium and Paris. His story is interesting as he is a self-made artist who started from scratch and ended up starring on the stage of one of the leading cabarets in Paris.

But for this to happen, his parents had to leave their homeland. To leave Crete and immigrate to Belgium for a better future. This happened in the early 1960s.

George Papadakis' father worked  in a coal mine, in a town 50 kilometres outside of Brussels, Charleroi. However, he cannot stand the difficult working conditions, so a little later he moves with his wife to Brussels.

There he works as a taxi driver and his wife opens a clothing store. With hard work they achieved their goals and at some point, the father of George Papadakis will start his own taxi company together with a partner.

George, with the help of his parents, then had the resources to follow his own dream, to become an actor. So at some point he left Brussels and moved to Paris to study.

In 1995, his parents returned to Crete, which was their great desire, and George decided to try his hand at Athens where he hoped to start working as an actor

But in Greece, and especially in its capital, acting, at least at that time, is a profession for a very few - for those with strong connections. He was disappointed and returned to Brussels, where he joined cabaret shows.

With his special talent, he stood out very quickly. He received a proposal from the legendary Crazy Horse in Paris, known for its burlesque aesthetic and more contemporary style.

"It's very difficult to get into Crazy Horse and it's even more difficult to stay there," George Papadakis told Proto Thema.

"They asked me to do a concept and test it, they liked it and so I ended up signing a contract with them. In every appearance I try to put a Greek touch to honour my homeland," he added.

If we consider that he is the first man to sing at Crazy Horse after Charles Aznavour, the presence of George Papadakis in the French temple of cabaret acquires even greater value. After all, his image alone refers to another era.

Proto Thema correspondents Frixos Drakontides, Thanasis Diamantopoulos and William Faithful saw for themselves at the Athenian club-restaurant, Parfait, where George Bangable appeared for five consecutive nights at the invitation of Giorgos Valaris, director and artistic curator of Parfait's shows.

In a word George Bangable was, riveting.

His dream is to open a cabaret in Greece. He would do it in the style of Crazy Horse, with original cabaret numbers, with a French air so that the real cabaret glamour, chic, as it is in Paris.
