Chinese Woman Suspected of Spying on the Dalai Lama to Be Deported

A Chinese woman suspected of spying on the Dalai Lama has been detained by police in Patna’s Bodh Gaya. She will soon be deported to China, the Times of India reported, adding that she has been overstaying in India.

According to India Today, the woman, identified as Song Xiaolam, was picked up by the police from outside Kalchakra ground where the Dalai Lama offers spiritual discourses.

The TOI report also said that intelligence agencies had raised an alarm about a “possible Chinese spy” in town and increased the security of the 14th Dalai Lama.

“We got inputs about a Chinese woman overstaying (her visa) in India who was in Bodh Gaya as a nun,” senior superintendent of police Harpreet Kaur told TOI. “During enquiry and screening of her documents, it was revealed a ‘leave India’ notice has been served on her,” Kaur said.

The newspaper said that senior Bihar police officers played down rumours regarding a threat to the Dalai Lama’s life.

The Chinese woman arrived in India for the first time on October 19, 2019, and travelled to Bodh Gaya to attend the Dalai Lama’s teachings, it said.

The spiritual leader is expected to be in the district till February 1.
