A mother accused of killing her one-year-girl, whose body was found at the Aliakmonas river dam, is to appear before a prosecutor in Veria following her arrest on Monday.

The 29-year-old, who reportedly suffers from mental health issues, had left home with the 11-month-old infant on New Year's Eve and returned alone to the village of Alexandria in Imathia, where they lived with her parents, the following day.

The police were immediately notified and an investigation began in order to find out exactly what happened. The infant was eventually found by police officers at the Aliakmonas dam and was taken to the Veria hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police officers from the Veria Police Department arrested the mother, who has been hospitalised in psychiatric clinics in the past.

The baby's body was transferred to Naoussa hospital, where a post mortem examination will be carried out.
