QatarGate - Eva Kaili saw her daughter for the first time since arriving in Haren prison

MEP Eva Kaili, who remains in custody in Haren women's prison in Brussels, had the opportunity to meet her two-year-old daughter on Friday.

At 17:20 Greek time, her father, Alexandros Kailis, entered the prison with his granddaughter for her first meeting with her mother since the day the former vice president of the European Parliament was arrested and detained.

Watch the video:

Kaili had filed a request through her lawyers to be allowed to meet her two-year-old daughter, which was accepted by the Belgian judicial authorities and this afternoon the meeting became a reality.

The former vice-president of the European Parliament had asked to meet her two-year-old daughter in prison or to see her via Skype. However, both requests were rejected, as her lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, said in his statements at noon.

This refusal had brought an outburst of Eva Kaili from within her cell.

As the Star TV station reported, Eva Kaili specifically said: "I am being tortured. This is unfair. I cannot stand. I'm falling apart. What is wrong with the little girl that they are keeping her away from me?"

Dimitrakopoulos said that Amnesty International and other organisations pushed the Belgian authorities to approve the visit.

The member of European Parliament has been in jail since December 9 after being arrested and charged following an investigation into Qatar’s lobbying operation in Brussels that has also ensnared Kaili’s partner, a former MEP and the head of a nongovernmental organisation.

Her lawyer said that the authorities “have no evidence to substantiate and link Eva Kaili to money and bribery.”

“The Belgians have found no evidence of the core offense of bribery, so the next-most-serious offense of money laundering does not stand,” he said in a separate interview on local Skai TV, adding that her lawyers will ask for restrictive conditions instead of detention.

“We may have developments even before 22 January, when her detention is scheduled to be reexamined," he said.

“Kaili cannot cooperate in this matter with the authorities because she knows nothing about her husband’s delinquent behavior,” Dimitrakopoulos said, as “she did not search her husband’s suitcase and briefcase.”

She claims that she learned about the money on the day of her partner’s arrest and panicked, then called her father and told him to get the baby’s suitcase and bottles from her flat. He was picked up at a Brussels hotel with a suitcase full of cash — which according to an arrest warrant, she asked him to get from her apartment.
