Alaattin Çakıcı: The Turkish "Al Capone" threatened Greece

Alaattin Çakıcı

Former member of the far right Grey Wolves and one of the leading figures of the Turkish underworld, Alaattin Çakıcı, made a scathing attack against Greece, allbecause the country's authorities rejected his visa to travel.

Notorious Turkish mafia boss Alaattin Çakıcı was released in 2020 after a law was passed to free around 90,000 prisoners to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the country's prisons.

In the past, Çakıcı, whom the Turkish media also calls the Turkish Al Capone, was convicted of founding a criminal organisation, moral complicity in dozens of murders, inciting attacks and insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

With his posting on social media, Çakıcı directed his shots against Greece for refusing to issue him a visa, saying that "[Greece] has not forgotten its defeat by the Ottoman Empire, even after centuries" and that: "If the inhabitants of Istanbul blow, there will be an earthquake of 15 Richter in Athens".

He specifically wrote: “I am a Turkish citizen who has traveled the world 25 times. I got visas from all over the world without any hassle.

"I have lived in USA for 3.5 years, I have been in Canada for 6 months, I have been in South African countries for about 1 year, I have been to Singapore, Malaysia, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Tibet, Taiwan 11-12 times."

"I entered and exited all European countries 100 times, in China and some Gulf countries. I got a visa for Greece twice many years ago (...) When I applied last time I was promised that the visa will be stamped in front of me. Then I learned that the request was rejected.

"This decision is the result of the crusading spirit of Greece, which has not forgotten its defeat by the Ottoman Empire even after centuries."

Then, the Turkish "Al Capone", attacked Greece and accused the US of equipping the Greek islands.

"They should not forget that the population of Istanbul is 2.5 that of Greece's. If the people of Constantinople blow, a 15 Richter earthquake will occur in Athens, Komotini, Kavala and Sparta," the criminal boss said.

"The US has armed all the islands from Crete to Alexandroupoli. Americans claim to be our nation's greatest ally since 1948, excluding England. The US president politicians and military bureaucrats know this nation well. Let them not forget that we are members of a unique nation," he said.

In the 1990's Çakıcı had murdered his wife in front of their son, but had managed to escape abroad.

Repeatedly, the government partner of Erdoğan and president of the Nationalist Action party, Devlet Bahçeli, had requested the release of Çakıcı due to the attraction it would have on far right votes.

In April 2020, a law by the Erdoğan government cleared the way for the early release of thousands of prisoners from the country's prisons, including Çakıcı, due to the risk of the spread of the coronavirus.
