Ministers sign off on Evros border fence final extension

Greek Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos and Deputy Minister Eleftherios Economou on Thursday signed off on the extension of the fence barrier along the entire length of the Evros border with Turkey.

In a statement, the ministry said that "rapid developments relating to the 'instrumentalization' of the migration issue have resulted in an unpredictable, unusual increase in migration flows extending along the country's land borders, with unpredictable consequences for public order and security."

For this reason, added the ministry, "it is considered necessary and urgent to extend the existing deterrent barrier in phase A, approximately 35 kilometers long, in the area between the settlement of Psathades at Didimoticho to the area of Kornofolia at Soufli, and which constitutes the first part of the total of 140 kilometers."
