Naxos among top sustainable travel experiences

The NZ Herald featured Naxos on its list of the world's recommended destinations for sustainable travel experiences in 2023.

With its rich history, inexhaustible mythology, nature-worship activities, ancient temples and impressive churches, according to the article, the Aegean island was at the top of NZ Herald's list.

Next on the Greek island is are Kanazawa in Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Botswana, the Ancient Quarry Trails in Peru, Uzbekistan, Oman and Corvocado National Park in Costa Rica.

According to the NZ Herald, research shows that, after the pandemic and amidst climate change, 89% of Australians intend to choose sustainable travel for their future holidays over other alternatives.

"Total air and ferry arrivals for 2022 in Naxos showed an impressive increase of 8.1% from May to September compared to 2019 and over 30% compared to 2021, while traffic moved extremely well before and after the tourist peak period," Deputy Mayor of Tourism of the Municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades, Vangelis Katsaras said, regarding the new distinction.

"We are listening to the changes of the international travel industry and we are trying to contribute to the extension of the season and to expand our narrative with alternative forms of tourism and activities in nature," he added.
