The Greek island of Naxos is among the top sustainable travel experiences

The Greek island of Naxos features in the first official list announced by the NZ Herald regarding the world's recommended destinations for sustainable travel experiences in 2023.

According to the article, Naxos was at the top of the NZ Herald's list with its rich history, inexhaustible mythology, nature-worship activities, ancient temples, and impressive churches.

According to the NZ Herald, research indicates that, after the pandemic and amidst climate change, 89% of Australians intend to choose sustainable travel for their future holidays over other alternatives.

"Total air and ferry arrivals for 2022 in Naxos showed an impressive increase of 8.1% from May to September compared to 2019 and over 30% compared to 2021, while traffic moved extremely well before and after the tourist peak period. We are listening to the changes in the international travel industry, and we are trying to contribute to the extension of the season and to expand our narrative with alternative forms of tourism and activities in nature", Deputy Mayor of Tourism of the Municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades, Vangelis Katsaras noted, regarding the new distinction.

Here are some things you could do in 5 days on the island of Naxos:

Day 1: Explore the town of Naxos, including the Venetian castle and the Portara, a large marble gate that dates back to ancient times.

Day 2: Visit the ancient site of the Sanctuary of Dionysus, where you can see the remains of a theatre and a temple dedicated to the god of wine.

Day 3: Take a day trip to the nearby island of Paros, which can be reached by ferry. You can explore the charming town of Parikia and visit the church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani, one of the oldest Christian churches in Greece.

Day 4: Head to the beach for sun, sand, and swimming. Some famous beaches on Naxos include Plaka Beach, Agia Anna Beach, and Mikri Vigla Beach.

Day 5: Visit the village of Apiranthos, which is known for its traditional architecture and stunning mountain views.

Note: Be sure to check the current situation of COVID-19 pandemic and check the opening hours of the tourist sites and beaches.
