Greek opposition party SYRIZA is demanding answers from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis over rumours and accusations first aired by media outlet Documento citing EYP, the Greek Intelligence Agency, that the head of the country's armed forces, General Konstantinos Floros had made questionable property purchases using 'black money'.
It was alleged that Floros bought a property in the area of Papagos, paying 600,000 euros in "black money".
The government has condemned the accusations against General Floros and has come to his support, in fact renewing his role as the Chief of the Greek Armed Forces.
"We want to repeat that the Government has the absolute confidence in the the leadership of the Armed Forces. No one will shake this trust. The Government is a guarantor of security, democracy and orderliness, as it has demonstrated by strengthening our defence capability, effective diplomacy, adherence to national interest and institutionalism." responded government spokesperson Giannis Economou.
General Floros finally broke his silence to condemn the accusations and allegations made against him and was supported by a statement from the Hellenic National Defence General Staff addressing the issue.
The Statement issued by the Hellenic National Defence General Staff:
"The attempted undermining of the moral, prestige and integrity of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff at a particularly critical moment for the country is clearly motivated and serves other interests.
"Because the mudslinging, unprecedented in Greek political history, extends to artificially constructed narratives about the alleged property of himself and his family members, the answer is clear: the financial situation of the Head of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff is described in detail - as is required, in the "Pothen Esches" (Income Declaration) that have also been filed in the "E9" and is at the disposal of the competent authorities. The same is the case with the statements of his family members.
"The alleged claims are absolutely false, slanderous, unproven and beyond all reality. They are not going to change the relationship of trust with the political leadership and with KYSEA.
The Hellenic National Defence General Staff reserves all his legal rights and continues to carry out the tasks assigned to him by his country, faithful to his oath, the Constitution and the laws of the state".
