Opposition MeRA25 leader and co-founder of Progressive International, Yanis Varoufakis, had a bilateral meeting with the Finance Minister of Cuba Meisi Bolaños Weiss during the first day of his visit to Cuba, according to a party announcement on Friday, which said the two sides briefed one another on the challenges and problems that Cuba and Greece currently face.
A visit to the building of the Communist Party of Cuba followed, where Varoufakis met with the party's first secretary Roberto Morales Ojeda and with the secretary of foreign relations, Emilio Lozada.
They exchanged views on geostrategic affairs, economic policy and international relations. The two sides shared their views on the role of China, Turkey and the USA and expressed shared fears of a new Cold War.
As noted by the announcement, the Cuban hosts expressed huge interest in the proposal (on the part of Progressive International) for a new Movement of Independents, adding that they consider MeRA25 the most steadfast political supporter of the Cuban Revolution.
"We agreed to work together and I was asked to establish a constantly open channel between of communication between MeRA25 and the Communist Party of Cuba," Varoufakis stated.
In the afternoon, he was received the President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel at the Presidential Mansion in Havana.
