Turkish official says the earthquake was caused by... military satellites!

A government official has put forward a fanciful theory about what caused the devastating earthquakes in Turkey, one you'd probably expect from a tinfoil-wearing conspiracy theorist.

Serdar Hüseyin Yıldırım, who is the president of the Turkish Space Agency, not only blamed foreigners for the tremors, but also "knows" how it happened.

Yildirim explained that earthquakes are caused by satellites in space dropping titanium rods into the ground.

“There are war satellites that can send 10 metre titanium alloy rods froms Space to any target! These rods penetrate to a depth of 5 kilometres into the ground, creating an earthquake of magnitude 7-8 on the Richter scale. It is not possible to trace them," he said.

Even after thousands of tweets mocking the "theory", Yıldırım clarified that what he is saying is not that improbable.

He was talking, at least he says, about a weapons system described by a strategy institute that could wipe a small town off the map.

“This system has no function such as activating fault lines or generating tectonic earthquakes. Therefore, it has nothing to do with the Kahramanmaraş disaster, which is a tectonic earthquake that occurred on a known fault line. I don't want it to be misunderstood."
